UK AND INTERNATIONAL CCS NEWS"Carbon capture and storage has great potential in industrial applications, is a cost-effective option for reducing CO2 emissions, says IEA- UNIDO report" The report is linked to the source page 2) Someday soon we'll be buying CCS-fitted powerstations from these people: "Chinese Government Drafts Plan to Develop Carbon Capture Industry" Bloomberg (22 Sept) "The government plans to double its spending on projects capturing and storing carbon in the five years ending 2015 to 400 million yuan from the preceding five-year period" 3) It's all happening in China: "Alstom SA (ALO), the third-largest maker of power equipment, and China Datang Corp. agreed to develop two trial projects to capture and store carbon..." Bloomberg (21 Sept) 4) "UK's ETI launches £3 million carbon capture and storage project" Energy Efficiency News (16 Sept) "The project will create a modelling tool-kit that is able to simulate the process from the capture of CO2 to its transport and storage." 5) One from Edinburgh showing that you are more likely to die in an accident involving your refrigerator than from CCS: "Study: Carbon Sequestration Presents No Threat to Human Health" Environmental Protection (16 Sept) "Researchers found that the risk of death from poisoning as a result of exposure to CO2 leaks from underground rocks is about one in 100 million ? far less than the chances of winning the lottery jackpot." 6) I don't know much about capture so I might file this under 'too good to be true'? "Snackable Sponge Sucks Up CO2" Discovery News (30 Sept) "A newly-developed synthetic sponge made of salt, sugar, and alcohol soaks up carbon dioxide. It's non-toxic, reusable, and carbon neutral. In a pinch, you can even make a meal of it." 7) "U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today the selection of six projects aimed at developing technologies to lower the cost of producing electricity in integrated gasification combined cycle power plants using carbon capture" PennEnergy (12 Sept) 8 ) News from a fractured basalt injection scheme: "Iceland's Hellisheidi prepares to start injection at carbon storage project" Industrial Power and Fuels (9 Sept) "The basalt is porous and contains as much as 30% open space and water." That's really high. 9) "CCSA launches new UK CCS strategy" Carbon Capture Journal (8 Sept) "It sets out a strategy to save 100Mt of CO2 per year and sequester 500Mt per year by 2030 in the UK."
