UKCCSC News 4 May 2010Hi Folks, Welcome to the new look UKCCSC news, where the last ‘C’stands for Community and not Consortium as previously. We’ve even given the website a spring clean. It too looks reassuringly familiar. We have a forth-coming meeting, aimed at ‘Early Careers Researchers’. Amusingly, I fit the definition of an ECR, and I’m practically considering my retirement options. Tuesday 6 July 2010, at the University of Edinburgh.
http://www.ukccsc.co.uk/Training.html There is also a planned meeting on the theme of “Academic Research Strategy Meeting for UK Geologic Storage and Monitoring of Carbon”. The date is TBC but it might be 7 July, i.e. the day after the meeting above, also in Edinburgh. We’ll be getting an award from VisitScotland at this rate…
National and International CCS-relevant News:The big (though not now very fresh) news is: “The [UK] Energy Bill, which proposed more financial support for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and outlined the role of Ofgem, became the Energy Act 2010 yesterday (April 8) after receiving Royal Assent.” NewEnergyFocus (9 Apr) “Introducing a new CCS Incentive to support the construction of four commercial-scale CCS demonstration projects in the UK, and the retrofit of additional CCS capacity to these projects should it be required at a future point.” DECC 2) An article rubbishing CCS in the scientific press has caused worldwide publicity: “US research paper questions viability of carbon capture and storage” Guardian (25 Apr) The following rebuttal comes from Haszeldine and Blunt: “Massive capacity for CO2 storage exists in the UK” Guardian (May 4) “We are sure that carbon capture and storage can stall the effects of climate change” 3) “Norway delays Mongstad Carbon Capture and Storage project” Reuters (May 2) “Norway said it would delay the decision to finance a top carbon capture project to 2014, after the life of the present parliament,” 4) More bad news from Norway, apparently only reported by a subscription-only site: “Cost of Norwegian CCS project soars to ¤1.3bn” ENDS Report 5) Better news from Down-under, though not CCS as we know it: “Australia Grants A$40 Million for First Carbon-Capture Project” Bloomberg (27 April) “The project will capture carbon dioxide emissions from the Yallorn coal-fired power station in Victoria, southeastern Australia, and convert the gas into minerals that can be used in construction,” 6) The University College London Carbon Capture Legal Programme has launched a new section of its website dedicated to liability for CCS under the provisions of EU legislation. 7) Better late than never? CO2GeoNet, the European Network of Excellence on the Geological Storage of CO2, is holding its fifth Open Forum in Venice, 10-11 May 2010. 8) Not quite so late but not exactly early: 2nd Carbon Capture & Storage Summit, Berlin, Germany, 19-20 May 2010 |
