UKCCSC News 30 August 2011
UKCCSC ItemsPlease keep checking the UKCCSC website, as details of the Winter School 2012 and any future Specialist Meetings will be posted in the coming weeks. International CCS NewsThe EU Framework 7 call for research proposals has sections for pilot-scale projects for both geological storage and combustion, but not apparently capture per se. 2) The USA's NETL needs someone to write snappy headlines? "Projects Aimed at Advancing State-of-the-Art Carbon Capture from Coal Power Plants Selected for Further Development" Press Release (Aug 15) "Four projects aimed at reducing the energy and cost penalties of advanced carbon capture systems...valued at approximately $67 million" The recipients are: Murray Hill, New Jersey; Neumann Systems Group, Colorado Springs; Southern Company, Atlanta; and the University of Kentucky Research Foundation. 3) "New ZEP [Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants] report offers exciting economic prospects for CCS technology" Bellona (1 Aug) "...beginning in 2020 and onward, costs of electricity production from fossil fuels at power plants equipped with CCS technology will be on the same level as those of power generation at offshore wind parks and solar panels." The report is at: 4) [USA] "Department of Energy Announces $41 Million Investment for Carbon Capture Development" Includes a list of recipients. 5) Need an A4-format flier to explain geological storage? Try this one from the ICO2N, a Canadian organisation: 6) If transport stories are rare, those involving ships are like rocking-horse manure: "Utilizing smaller ships for carbon dioxide capture and storage" The Denki Shimbun (26 Aug) "...two ships take turns transporting approximately 3,000 tons of CO2 once every day..." 7) It had nothing to do with CCS but... "Earthquake raises concern about proposed plant, pipeline" Central Jersey (24 Aug) "In the wake of Tuesday?s earthquake, a coalition of 37 environmental groups, three municipalities and Atlantic County freeholders are stressing a need for legislation to ban experimental technology to inject liquified carbon dioxide pollution into the sea floor." 8 ) "Bulgaria to draft carbon emissions bill to escape 777 000 euro fine" the Sofia Echo (26 Aug) "...member states had until June 25 2011 to bring their legislation in line with the EU requirements." 9) "New EPA [USA Environmental Protection Agency] Proposal Encourages Carbon Capture and Sequestration" WFPL News (4 Aug) "The Environmental Protection Agency says injecting carbon dioxide underground doesn?t pose substantial environmental or health risks. The agency is proposing a rule to classify carbon dioxide as a non-hazardous waste and encourage a controversial coal technology." We nearly had a Canadian story about the Quest project, until I discovered we'd covered it in 2009, again in 2010, and once again earlier in 2011...these stories go round and around. The Swan Hills Synfuels scheme nearly made it in again too, this job is trickier than it looks! |
