UKCCSC News 2nd May 2011

Internal UKCCSC News

We are working on finalising dates for our Carbon Capture meeting, being jointly planned with the CO2Chem Network and our Early Career Annual meeting. Both meetings will be this July at the University of Nottingham. All updates will be posted online here

National and International News

A short news triggered by the first story. It must be good as several people sent it to me independently:

Saskatchewan “Government approves $1.24 billion Carbon Capture Project” SaskPower (26 Apr)

“The Government of Saskatchewan has approved construction of the Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Project – among the first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage facilities in the world.”

2) “Global Energy Ministers Agree to Speed up CO2-Capture Projects” (Bloomberg, 7 Apr)

““There can be no solution to climate change and energy security globally without carbon capture and storage,” [UK] Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said”

3) At the same meeting, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released its first Clean Energy Progress Report.

“which said that governments around the world must adopt … funding for large-scale CCS demonstrations.”

5) “German cabinet approves carbon capture and storage bill” EcoSeed (14 Apr)

“The bill would legalize the testing of technology and exploration of locations, which are suitable for carbon dioxide storage.”

6) The UK Environment Agency, who regulate the operation of fossil fuel power stations in England and Wales, has published an environmental risk assessment for CCS .

“…we expect to be able to issue environmental permits for all the proposed CCS technologies.”

7) If you are in the area next month, the Cheltenham Science Festival will be on from 7-12 June, with special CCS exhibit on the 10^th from a few of our UKCCSC members across the UK.

“Many of the downsides of using fossil fuels could be avoided if we could just stop all that carbon dioxide escaping into the atmosphere. Meet three engineers whose work does just that: Paul Fennell, Hannah Chalmers and Trevor Drage aim to trap the CO2 escaping from power stations and other sources. Their plans for the captured carbon go beyond just pumping it back underground: could we recycle it by turning it back into fuel?”
