UKCCSC News 15 June 2010

Hi Folks,

Just a quick reminder of the forthcoming meeting in Edinburgh on the 6 July aimed at ‘early career’ researchers. Don’t be shy, the definition of ‘early career’ is broad and one of the aims of the meeting is to work out what we should be going to help you…

National and International News:

The USA is on a spending spree…

“Energy Dept. doles out massive sums to carbon capture, geothermal projects” GreenBeat (10 Jun)

“Carbon capture had a big day today, receiving $612 million in stimulus funding from the DOE, which will be matched with $368 million in private financing to round out nearly $1 billion of new capital.”

2) “The world’s most comprehensive guideline for safe and sustainable geological storage of CO2”

“This unified procedural framework will support both developers and legislators, and is a breakthrough for efforts to speed up the large scale deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).”

3) Not very detailed, but the article (with a rather unrepresentative title) gives a brief summary of energy policy for the new UK Government:

“LibDems will abstain from nuclear votes” Reuters (May 12)

“The Conservative-led coalition plans to push on with Labour's plan to invest public money in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology for four coal-fired power stations and maintain the Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC) system.”

4) “The International Performance Assessment Centre for Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide (IPAC-C02) has announced the formation of a network linking organizations in eight countries that conduct research into the geological storage of carbon dioxide.” LeaderPost (19 May)

5) “Scottish carbon storage project launched” LowCarbonEcomony.com (3 Jun)

“The target rock, called the Captain Sandstone, is said to be 30 miles off the coast and buried more than half a mile under the sea bed.”

6) “Award-Winning DOE Technology Scores Success in Carbon Storage Project – NETL” ArticleAnt (no date?)

“SEQURE [NETL tracer technology] uses perfluorocarbon tracers (PFTs) – non-toxic, chemically inert clear colorless liquids – to provide a verifiable way to measure CO2 movement as well as provide leak detection.”

7) “UCL publishes overview of EU Directive on Geological Storage of CO2” Bellona (18 May)

The Directive is key to the deployment of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in Europe and must be transposed into national law in all EU Member states by the end of 2011.

8) Not strictly CCS but let’s live a little…

“Climate Evidence 'Compelling,' Research Council Urges U.S. to Act Now” ecofactory (20 May)

“"Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for - and in many cases is already affecting - a broad range of human and natural systems," the National Research Council advised Wednesday in one of three separate reports on climate change requested by Congress.”

9) If you’ve barely heard of MOFs you could do worse than this:

“The search for improved carbon sponges picks up speed” R&D (27 May)

“They're betting on a recently discovered class of materials called metal-organic frameworks that boast a record-shattering internal surface area.”

11) A study based in Edinburgh:

“Carbon storage plans for Moray Firth rock beds” BBC News (2 Jun)

“They will examine the Captain Sandstone field, which lies half a mile below the sea bed and at least 30 miles into the North Sea.”
