UKCCSC News 16 July 2010

Hi Folks,

A big thanks to all those who attended the two UKCCSC meetings this month in Edinburgh. For a change of scene don’t forget the UKCCSC Biannual Meeting in Leeds 14-15 September 2010. Details will go on the web

Academic Input for DECC Competition

The Office of Carbon Capture and Storage is working to develop a Knowledge Sharing policy to ensure that knowledge developed from the UK demonstration programme is shared and disseminated to help the advancement of CCS. They are keen to have UKCCSC member input and would be grateful for any views you have on the type of information you would like to have access to from the development and operation of UK demonstration projects. If you’d like to contribute to this process, they would be grateful if you could complete the attached spreadsheet and return to ruth.herbert@decc.gsi.gov.uk by Friday 30 July at the latest. Please note that any early returns (by Thursday 22 July) would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of CCS-related jobs on offer at the moment.

Also, if you have any PhD/post-doc/lecturer or other adverts in CCS that you’d like added, please email robin.cathcart@ed.ac.uk and we’ll post them online.

World CCS News

First, a global perspective of progress:

“Global carbon capture plans lag climate target-IEA” Reuters Africa (14 Jun)

“…the IEA estimated that governments had committed over the past two years to provide over $26 billion in funding support for demonstration projects. That compares with an annual funding need of between $5 billion and $6.5 billion over the next decade.”

2) “University [of Texas at Austin] Receives $19 Million to Monitor Carbon Storage Project” UT Austin News (28 Jun)

“The University of Texas at Austin will receive up to $19 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and NRG Energy to design and oversee a monitoring plan for a carbon capture and storage demonstration project in southeast Texas.”

3) It is often said that CO2 storage need only last for 10,000 years, the following story says otherwise:

“'Carbon storage' faces leak dilemma – study” The Independent (3 July)

“… less than one percent of the stored volume can be allowed to leak from the chamber per 1,000 years.”

4) The USA Climate Bill has been in the news for as long as I can remember, looks like it’s going to fade away quicker than the Gulf Coast spill?

“Barack Obama fails to rally support for energy bill” Guardian (29 June)

“Senators at the much-anticipated meeting acknowledged there was political support only for modest reforms.

5) From Chris Huhne, head of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (of course you all knew that):

“U.K. Needs Meaningful Carbon Price, U.K.’s Huhne Says” Bloomberg (24 Jun)

“Prime Minister David Cameron’s administration is considering a minimum price for CO2 emissions when the cost of European Union permits falls below a certain level.2

That man again:

“…you need swing capacity to meet peak demand and realistically I can't see that coming from anywhere else except carbon capture and storage from coal and gas." Guardian (24 Jun)

6) “Alstom, Dow Technology to Demonstrate Carbon Capture in France” Environmental Protection (21 Jun)

“The EDF Group has awarded a contract to Alstom to develop, construct, operate and test an industrial demonstration facility to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) at the Le Havre coal-fired electric power plant in France”

7) “Lord Turner Gives Recommendations Regarding Gas Plants” TopNews (6 Jun)

“Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, Lord Adair Turner, demanded that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) competition should also cover gas and coal projects”

8) The USA is spending cash on CCS so fast it’s tricky to keep up, I don’t think we’ve had this one before:

“Air Products: $253m to capture carbon from steam methane reformers” the hydrogen journal (18 Jun)

“Air Products will design, construct and operator a system to capture carbon dioxide from its two steam methane reformers at the Valero Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. The reformers generate hydrogen which is used by nearby refineries.”

9) Or this one:

“The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has signed an agreement with NRG Energy Inc. for the Parish Post-Combustion CO2 Capture and Sequestration Project to design, construct, and operate a system that will capture and store approximately 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.” Power-Gen (18 Jun)

10) Ever wanted a quick trip around a capture plant? Try central London?

“A NEW carbon capture plant is being built at Imperial College as part of an £8.9m ($13.3m) refurbishment project.” The Chemical Engineer today (12 july)

11) Peterhead revisited? Sorry, that’s a bit literary for a science-based audience, try: Peterhead powerstation - Miller oilfield CCS scheme (Scotland) revisited?

“Carbon capture test plan for Peterhead revealed” BBC News (8 July)

“Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said the initiative would look at a number of options at the gas-fired station.”
